I am directed to request that an early

reply may be furnished to the letter from this Department of

the 27th. ultimo, respecting the rate of exchange for the pay-

ment of pensions out of the Widows and Orphans' Fund to

persons residing in a Gold-using Country.

I am to add that the great delay which

has already occurred in dealing with this matter is causing

grave inconvenience,
